James Edgar Marshall was the son of Horace (ca. 1781-1828?) and Elizabeth (Heiskell) Marshall (ca. 1787-1828) of Fredericksburg, VA. James attended the University of Virginia in session 1 (1825). In the Matriculation Books, his name is given as “John E. Marshall,” instead of James. This is probably due to the fact that the information for 1825-1826 was written into the books by the registrar instead of the students themselves.
Also in the Matriculation Books is the notation that James “died Nov. 3 caused by a fractured leg.” He is buried in St. George’s Episcopal Burying Ground, Fredericksburg, VA. On his tombstone is the inscription: “He was a dutiful & affectionate son and died much much lamented by all who knew him.”
