John Orfeur Yates (5 Aug. 1813-28 Mar. 1839)

John O. Yates was born at “Walnut Grove” in Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was the son of John Yates (d. 1851) and his wife Julia Lovell (d. 1866).

Yates attended the University of Virginia in sessions 7-8 and 10 (1830-1832 and 1833-1834). He graduated in the Law School, and practiced in Charlestown, VA (now WV) from 1834 to 1838. In the spring of 1838, he caught a cold from which he could not recover. He and his brother, Dr. William Yates, went south in Nov. 1838, first to New Orleans, then to Pensacola, Florida, to see if the warm weather would help his illness. John died in the spring of 1839, in Pensacola. He was buried in Saint Michaels Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pensacola.

“A career brilliant in promise was cut short by death…” (Aglionby, p. 50)
