Born in Augusta Co., VA, son of William Brooks (1789-1857), a veteran of the War of 1812, and his wife, Elvira A. Dodd (1804-1890), William H. Brooks attended Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), then the University of Virginia in session 34 (1857-1858), where he studied law. He died in Columbia, SC, while attending the Theological Seminary—“In the midst of his Theological course he was suddenly snatched away.” (Staunton Spectator, 26 Mar. 1861) He is buried in Old Presbyterian Cemetery in Waynesboro, Virginia.
